Standing Detour - Emergency West Busway Berry Street Tunnel Closures - Pittsburgh Regional Transit
As necessary, during emergencies such as accidents, flooding of either end, landslides, ice or snow, Pittsburgh Regional Transit and its departments, primarily Road Operations, Special Services or Port Authority Police may opt to temporarily close the Berry Street Tunnel on the agency's West Busway as a temporary safety measure until the situation is rectified. When necessary, the detour will be initiated - and stopped - through notification by Bus Traffic Operations or by Road Operations, Special Services or Port Authority Police personnel responding to the scene. Due to turning and gradient issues on the detour, a return to tunnel operation will be announced as soon as it is available. A secondary but lengthier detour is provided for articulated buses Pittsburgh Regional Transit operates, and over-the-road motor coaches operated on Beaver County Transit Authority's Route 4 Pittsburgh-Chippewa Express due to clearance issues along the primary detour (turns) and if needed during winter months and snowfalls as an alternative as gradients are severe on the primary detour.
