Riding the Bus

Our 98 bus routes are the backbone of our transit network.

PRT operates and maintains a fleet of nearly 700 diesel and electric buses that connects people to neighborhoods, business districts, schools, shopping, and destinations throughout Allegheny County. With nearly 100 routes operating every day, our buses make it easy to get where you need to go. Riding the bus is simple, convenient, and accessible for everyone.

Plan Your Trip

Use our online Trip Planner by entering your starting and ending points to determine which bus(es) will get you there. Be sure to check for any service alerts or Detours that could affect your travel.

Catch Your Bus

Before you leave, make sure you have the correct fare for your trip.

Please arrive at your stop at least five minutes ahead of the scheduled arrival time.

When you see a bus approaching, look at the destination sign above the front windshield to verify the route number.

As the bus approaches, signal to the operator that you want to board by standing or raising your hand. Please remain on the curb until the bus stops and

Pay Your Fare

If you have a valid paper ticket or mobile fare, tap your card or scan your mobile device on the validator to the right of the operator upon entry.

If you don’t already have a ticket or a pass, you can pay for your ride when you board the bus by inserting exact cash into the farebox. The farebox accepts both dollar bills and coins, but please have your exact payment ready as operators cannot make change.

For more information on different types of fares, visit our Fares and Payment to learn more.

Choose Your Stop

Once you’ve boarded the bus, take a seat, enjoy the ride, and watch for your stop. Electronic audio announcers will announce and an LED sign at the front of the bus will display all major intersections so you can tell when you’re getting close to your stop.

PRT buses are equipped with cords that run along the top of the windows on both sides of the bus or "Stop" button on the handrail near the back doors. Pull the cord or press the button to signal the operator that your stop or destination is approaching.

The "Stop Requested" sign at the front of the bus will light up and an audio announcement will play when you have activated the signal.

Exiting the Bus

Please exit from the front or rear door when possible.

Wait until the bus pulls away so you can see traffic clearly before crossing the street. For your safety, do not cross in front of the bus.
