Riding the T (Light Rail)
Our light rail system -- better known as The T -- offers fast, convenient service between the North Shore, Downtown Pittsburgh, and the South Hills.
The system includes three lines -- Red, Blue, and Silver -- that that travel through Downtown before continuing to their southern destinations. Whether you're commuting to work, heading to a sporting event, or exploring the city, riding The T is convenient, fast, fun, and easy.
Plan Your Trip
Use our online Trip Planner by entering your starting and ending points to determine which line will get you there. Be sure to check for any service alerts or detours that could affect your travel.
Catch Your T
Arrive at your station at least five minutes before your scheduled departure. Electronic signs at many stations display upcoming train arrival times. As the vehicle approaches, stand behind the platform edge until it comes to a complete stop, then allow passengers to exit before boarding.
Pay Your Fare
PRT uses a "Pay Where You Live" fare system on the T. That means when you pay depends on the direction you're traveling.
- Traveling inbound (toward Downtown Pittsburgh): Pay your fare when you board the vehicle.
- Traveling outbound (away from Downtown): Pay your fare when you exit the vehicle.
First Avenue Station, Steel Plaza, Wood Street Station, Gateway Station, North Shore Station, and Allegheny Station are part of PRT's Free Fare Zone, so no fare is required for trips that begin and end at those stations.
If your trip starts or ends outside the Free Fare Zone, you'll pay your fare according to the policy above.
For more information on different types of fares, visit our Fares and Payment to learn more.
Choose Your Stop
Pay attention to the announcements and displays as your vehicle approaches your destination.
PRT light rail vehicles are equipped with cords that run along the top of the windows and stop strips you can press to notify the operator to stop at the next station.
Exiting the T
As your stop approaches, gather your belongings and move toward the door.
At low-level stops, you will use the doors that have steps. At high-level stops, you will exit all other doors.
Exit carefully once the train has come to a complete stop, and watch your step as you leave the vehicle.
