Closure of Wabash Tunnel for Safety Repairs

PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh Regional Transit today announced that the Wabash Tunnel will be closed for two weeks while crews make needed safety repairs.

Work will begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, and is scheduled to be completed by 7 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20.

Motorists who use the tunnel should find alternate routes.

Originally constructed in 1903 as part of the Wabash-Pittsburg Terminal Railroad, PRT (then the Port Authority of Allegheny County) acquired the tunnel in 1996 and converted it into a roadway with support from the FTA. It reopened in 2004 as a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) facility and was later made available to all traffic in 2017 due to low utilization under HOV restrictions.

Today, the tunnel is used primarily by private vehicles and no longer serves as part of PRT’s regular transit network. PRT only uses it as a detour route when needed. The safety repairs will continue to make the tunnel a viable option if needed.
