PRT Continues Ridership Momentum, Reaches Highest Annual Total in Six Years

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Regional Transit recorded its highest fiscal year ridership in six years during FY2026, driven by strong growth across the system and a nearly 10% increase in average weekday ridership in June.

PRT provided 39,097,077 unlinked passenger trips across all modes in FY2026, a 5% increase over FY2025 and the highest annual ridership total since FY2020.

In June 2026, PRT recorded 3,267,093 passenger trips across bus, rail, and ACCESS paratransit. Average weekday ridership reached 122,151, a 9.7% increase compared with June 2025. Ridership also increased on weekends, with average Saturday ridership up 4.3% and Sunday ridership up 8.1% year over year.

June 2026 Ridership

Bus ridership was the primary driver of June’s growth. Average weekday bus ridership increased 11.3% compared with June 2025, reaching 110,161 trips per weekday. Average weekday rail ridership increased 1.4% to 11,785 trips.

On Saturdays, average systemwide ridership reached 73,059 trips. Bus ridership increased 5.9% year over year, while rail ridership increased 13.3%.

June ridership data for the Monongahela Incline was not available at the time of publication. The incline typically accounts for less than 1% of total system ridership.

FY2026 Ridership

Bus ridership totaled 34,711,546 trips in FY2026, an increase of 5% over FY2025. Rail ridership totaled 3,345,565 trips, an increase of 8%.

Rail ridership growth reflects a return to more typical travel patterns following the multi-month Red Line closure in FY2024. Average rail ridership increased 9% on weekdays, 6% on Saturdays, and 2% on Sundays compared with FY2025.

ACCESS paratransit service provided 848,312 rides during FY2026. Ridership was relatively stable, declining 2% compared with FY2025.

Overall, 74 of PRT’s 99 routes saw ridership increases compared with FY2025.
