Where We Stand Today
This dashboard features ridership and on-time performance both at an agency and a route level. Key performance metrics are updated at the end of each month with data from the previous month. Updates may be delayed by data processing issues.
Reliability refers to how consistently transit service meets published schedules. This includes whether vehicles arrive on time, complete their trips, and provide predictable service riders can depend on.
Reliability is influenced by many factors working together, including:
Vehicle maintenance and availability
Operator staffing and attendance
Scheduling and route design
Traffic, construction, and weather
For example, a single on-time trip depends on a vehicle being maintained and ready, an operator reporting to work, and a route that can be completed within the scheduled time despite real-world conditions.
PRT tracks reliability using metrics such as on-time performance and missed trips. These are published monthly through interactive dashboards, with additional analysis in the Annual Service Report.
How Reliability Has Changed Since Covid-19
Reliability declined during the COVID-19 pandemic due to workforce shortages and shifting travel patterns. Since then, PRT has restored its workforce and is actively improving performance through ongoing service adjustments and system redesign. While reliability continues to improve, performance can vary by route, time of day, and external conditions such as traffic and construction.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted transit operations and travel patterns. Operator shortages led to missed trips and reduced reliability across the system.
Demand shifted away from traditional rush hours, making some schedules and routes less effective and harder to operate reliably.
By late 2024, PRT restored its operator workforce and began transitioning from recovery to active reliability management through service adjustments and long-term planning.
How PRT Improves Reliability
Reliability is managed through a combination of staffing, scheduling, technology, and system design. PRT makes adjustments throughout the year to respond to changing conditions and improve performance.
Reliable transit allows riders to plan their day with confidence. It reduces missed trips, shortens wait times, and improves access to jobs, education, and essential services. Consistent, dependable service is the foundation for a stronger transit system and supports long-term growth in transit use.
PRT addressed pandemic-era operator shortages through expanded hiring, training, and incentives. Reaching full staffing levels has reduced missed trips and improved service consistency across the system.
PRT adjusts service three times each year—in February, June, and October—through a process known as “service picks.”
These adjustments:
Align schedules with real-world travel times
Add recovery time to improve on-time performance
Reallocate service where it is most effective
These changes are one of PRT’s most important tools for improving reliability. However, they require balancing trade-offs, as adding time to improve reliability can reduce how frequently vehicles run.
Traffic, construction, and road closures can delay service. PRT:
Implements short-term detours
Adjusts routes for longer-term projects
Coordinates with municipalities and PennDOT
These actions help maintain service and keep schedules as accurate as possible.
PRT provides real-time vehicle tracking and arrival information through the Ready2Ride app and is expanding real-time displays at stations.

Designing a More Reliable Network (Bus Line Refresh)
PRT is redesigning its bus network through Bus Line Refresh to improve reliability by design.
Proposed improvements include:
Shorter, more direct routes
Fewer turns and less exposure to congestion
Built-in time for operators to stay on schedule
This long-term effort complements regular service adjustments by addressing the root causes of unreliable service.
Reliable service depends on vehicles and infrastructure being in good condition. PRT performs regular maintenance, manages its fleet, and works with municipalities to maintain stops and stations.
