PRT and local partners will be redesigning the station to improve accessibility by making the facility more comfortable, sustainable, attractive, and easier to use.

The bus stop is the first point of contact between the passenger and the bus service. The spacing, location, design, and operation of bus stops significantly influence transit system performance and customer satisfaction. However, since most bus stops are located on municipal or state right-of-way, not PRT-owned properties, we must work closely with our partners at municipalities and PennDOT to ensure bus stops meet our guidelines.

This project would redesign Dormont Junction Station to provide opportunities for future development, increase transit use, and improve station access.

Creating a better, more connected station on the MLK Jr. East Busway and transit-oriented development on PRT property.

Plans are in the works to improve Herron Station, located along the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway at the intersection of Polish Hill, Lower Lawrenceville, and the Strip District.

This project will make it easier and safer for people to get to bus stops, add amenities to bus stops that improve the overall experience, and improve transit speed and reliability between Homestead and McKeesport and primarily along State Route 837.

The NEXTransit Downtown Plan was completed in the summer of 2023 and recommended new routes for PRT bus services in Downtown Pittsburgh that are more efficient and improve amenities for riders and complement the PRTX University Line Bus Rapid Transit project.

Making the station safer and more welcoming, increasing station access, and encouraging future transit-oriented development.

PRT is seeking to create a new Wilkinsburg Station closer to businesses and the heart of the community, easier to use and navigate, and provide an open space that can be filled with art and programming by the community. PRT has also proposed creating a new station in Homewood between North Braddock and Brushton Avenues that will be within walking distance to most of Homewood community.

This project will develop a plan for extending the MLK Jr. East Busway from its current endpoint at Swissvale Station eastward through Rankin, Braddock, and East Pittsburgh.
