Monongahela Incline Rehabilitation Project

The Monongahela Incline is a community asset that provides a quick and reliable connection between Mt. Washington, Station Square and downtown Pittsburgh.

PRT completed a major rehabilitation of the Monongahela Incline to maintain the historic facility, improve reliability and modernize its mechanical, electrical and control systems.

The project included improvements to the Incline's infrastructure, stations and operating systems while preserving the character and function of one of Pittsburgh's most recognizable transportation landmarks.

Project Improvements

The completed rehabilitation included:

- Replacement of the Incline's drive sheaves.

- Structural improvements, including gabion replacement, rock stabilization, rail repairs, concrete repairs and drainage improvements.

- Repairs and painting of the Incline's rails.

- Improvements to the upper and lower stations, including tile replacement, painting and refinishing of existing wood trim.

- Replacement of doors, windows and station roofs.

- New decorative railings.

- A new glass floor in the upper station waiting area, allowing visitors to see the Incline's inner workings.

- HVAC improvements, including new exhaust fans, controls and duct modifications.

- New control systems.

- New door signals and operators, proximity switches and emergency-stop systems.

- A new operator workstation and upgrades to the vehicle power systems.

- Electrical service and power-distribution upgrades.

- A new generator and uninterruptible power supply.

- Replacement of track lighting.

Project Completion

The rehabilitation project is complete and the Monongahela Incline has returned to service.
