Plinth Project

Pittsburgh Regional Transit successfully completed the multi-year Downtown subway concrete plinth project in February 2025.

The project included the repair and replacement of the concrete plinths (the concrete beams that support the light-rail tracks) inside the downtown subway tunnels.

The effort began in 2022 -- initially utilizing weekend-only and phase-based closured -- and wrapped up its final intensive construction phases in early 2025. 

The goal of the project was to significant increase system safety, reliability, and the lon-term longevity of the light-rail infrastructure.
