Pittsburgh Regional Transit is hiring full-time bus operators. This job is all about safely driving a bus, helping customers get where they need to go, and providing friendly, professional service.
Starting pay is $19.00/hour, with the opportunity to earn up to $23.50/hour. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and rotating schedules.
Safely drive a bus on regular routes or special services while following all traffic laws and PRT rules.
Stay on schedule and let our operations team know if there are delays or unusual situations.
Perform required safety checks on the bus before starting your shift.
Collect fares and make sure passengers pay correctly.
Help riders who use wheelchairs or scooters and make sure their mobility devices are safely secured.
Announce stops clearly so passengers know where they are.
Greet customers, answer questions, and provide great service.
Fill out basic paperwork accurately and on time.
Keep customers safe in all kinds of road and traffic conditions.
A high school diploma or GED
Must be at least 21 years old
Valid PA driver's license
No more than 3 points on your license
No chargeable or at-fault accidents within the last 3 years
No DUI within the last 3 years
No license suspensions within the last 3 years
Available for any or all shifts
The ability to work out of any of our work locations
No CDL is required
If you qualify for operator training, you will obtain your Commercial Driver's License as part of the training program.
If you already have a CDL license, you will still need to go through the training program but you will not need to re-test for a CDL.
Whether you’ve already applied or are just getting started, here’s what to expect.
Once your resume is received, you will be contacted by either phone or email to get scheduled for a testing session and interview.
An online application will be sent to you to fill out prior to your testing time and date.
The testing session will consist of a three-part test. The validated test is used to identify candidates whose skills and abilities match out requirements.
If you are unsuccessful on the test, you will be eligible to re-rest for the next class.
Successful applicants will then move on to the interviewing process.
Operators are required to provide proof of education and to have a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33). The form to apply for clearance will be provided at the interview.
Interviewees selected for the operator position will have their name placed in a candidate pool for training classes and will be contacted when a training class is scheduled (based off staffing needs)
The job offer for a student operator training class is contingent upon a satisfactory background check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, pre-employment physical and drug screening, and receiving a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit.
Work Hours
Operators work 40 hours per week, with shifts that may include days, evenings, weekends, holidays. Overtime may also be available.
Reporting Locations
PRT employs over 1,200 operators at five locations: Collier, Ross, East Liberty, West Mifflin, and South Hills Village.
