PITTSBURGH – The normally inactive rail line between Steel Plaza and Penn Station will be closed for nearly four months while crews complete concrete and track repairs and conduct leak mitigation inside the Penn Tunnel, Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced today.

The tunnel is used only during detours and special events, and the work will help ensure it remains a reliable backup route when needed.

The closure begins Thursday, July 23, and is expected to continue through November. Riders will see no impact to service with this closure.

However, two weekend closures between First Avenue and Steel Plaza, tentatively scheduled for August 7-10 and August 14-17, will be needed to allow crews to work on the tracks that lead to the tunnel. During those weekends, shuttle buses will connect First Avenue Station and Steel Plaza.

All stations will remain accessible during the weekend closures, and PRT employees will be available at Steel Plaza to assist riders with transfers.
