Commemorative vehicle celebrates the nation's 250th anniversary and pays tribute to a beloved piece of Pittsburgh transit history
PITTSBURGH, PA - As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) today unveiled a specially wrapped light rail vehicle inspired by the iconic "Spirit of '76" streetcar that traveled Pittsburgh's rails during the nation's Bicentennial celebration in 1976.
Created in recognition of America250, the nationwide commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the two-car train combines a historic design that many Pittsburghers remember with a renewed spirit of civic pride.
"Nearly 50 years ago, Port Authority marked our nation's Bicentennial with a memorable 'Spirit of '76' streetcar that became a symbol of celebration throughout our region," said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. "As America prepares to celebrate its 250th, we're proud to honor that history and connect today's riders to a unique chapter in Pittsburgh's transit story."
The original "Spirit of '76" streetcar was introduced as part of nationwide Bicentennial celebrations. It quickly became one of the most recognizable vehicles in the Port Authority fleet. Adorned in patriotic colors and imagery, it reflected the pride and optimism of a nation celebrating 200 years of independence.
PRT's tribute coincides with the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum's recent unveiling of a restored Bicentennial-era streetcar, offering another opportunity for the public to experience a piece of the region's transit history during the America250 commemoration.
PRT's modern interpretation captures the spirit of the original design while adapting it to today's light rail fleet. Featuring a patriotic red, white, and blue design inspired by the 1976 vehicle, the commemorative light rail car serves as a rolling tribute to both the nation's history and the enduring role of public transportation in connecting communities.
For nearly six decades, PRT has helped millions of riders travel to work, school, community celebrations, sporting events, and historic moments throughout the Pittsburgh region. The America250 vehicle recognizes that public transportation has long played a key role in bringing people together and strengthening communities.
"Public transit is woven into the story of our region," Kelleman said. "This special vehicle celebrates our past while reminding us that transit continues to connect people to opportunity, to one another, and to the places and events that define our communities."
The commemorative vehicle #4255 will operate throughout PRT's light rail system at least through the rest of the year, allowing riders and rail enthusiasts alike to experience a modern tribute to one of the most memorable vehicles in Pittsburgh transit history.
