Portion of rail system in Downtown to close this weekend

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Regional Transit will temporarily suspend light rail service between First Avenue and Steel Plaza stations this weekend while crews perform track and concrete work.

The work is scheduled to begin at the end of service on Friday, September 18, and continue through the start of service on Monday, September 21. A second weekend of work is tentatively scheduled for October 23-26.

Crews will be performing concrete work on the tracks that lead to Penn Tunnel, which has been closed since July for repairs. Penn Tunnel connects Steel Plaza Station and Penn Station and serves as a backup route during service detours and special events. The work will help ensure the route remains reliable when needed.

During the closure, shuttle buses will operate between First Avenue and Steel Plaza.

A rail shuttle will operate between Steel Plaza and Allegheny Station.

All stations will remain accessible, and PRT employees will be available at Steel Plaza to assist riders with transfers.

Riders should allow up to 20 additional minutes for their trips.
