September 28 - Bus Lane Enforcement to Begin October 1

PITTSBURGH – Police will begin issuing tickets to motorists driving in the bus-only lane on Thursday, October 1, Pittsburgh Regional Transit reminded drivers today.

Port Authority Police have been issuing verbal warnings to motorists since contractors completed installing the lanes along Forbes and Fifth avenues between Bellefield and Craft avenues last month. In accordance with the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, the citation for driving in the bus-only lane includes a $25 fine and approximately $175 in associated fees.

Private vehicles and bicycles are prohibited from entering, stopping, or parking in the bus lanes, even for brief pickups, drop-offs, or deliveries. Pickups and drop-offs should be made on side streets or in designated loading zones.

To make a right turn, drivers may enter the bus lanes where the red lane is dashed. Motorists should indicate they want to enter the bus-only lane with their turn signal and merge into the lane only after checking to make sure no buses are approaching. Motorists should never pull in front of a bus. 

The dedicated bus lanes are reserved exclusively for buses and emergency vehicles and are clearly marked to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of public transit vehicles. Drivers should pay close attention to street signage and lane markings.
