Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel to Close This Weekend

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) will temporarily close the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel this weekend to complete remaining work with the 2025 construction project.

The closure will begin at the end of service on Friday, October 2, and continue through the start of service on Monday, October 5.

During the closure, all inbound and outbound light rail service will detour through Allentown. A rail shuttle will operate between the outbound platform of Station Square and Allegheny Station to maintain service along the corridor.

Bus service will also be detoured. Inbound buses will generally use Allentown streets, while outbound service will use the Wabash Tunnel.

Riders should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the closure.

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is a critical link in PRT’s transit network, connecting South Hills Junction and Station Square Station. It’s the only tunnel in the country shared by both buses and light rail vehicles.
