Temporary Traffic Pattern on Fifth Avenue in Oakland to Begin Monday

PITTSBURGH – An additional lane of traffic will close along Fifth Avenue in Oakland beginning Monday, September 28, as contractors working on the University Line bus rapid transit project install five concrete islands.

Contractors have had two lanes of Fifth Avenue closed for the past several months. Starting Monday, construction crews will close another lane for three blocks between Bellefield Avenue and Lytton Avenue, leaving one lane open to general traffic. Buses will continue to travel in the red bus-only lane.

Access to side streets and crosswalks will be maintained. Motorists should expect delays and allow additional time for travel.

About the University Line    

The University Line will deliver a modernized transit corridor featuring dedicated bus lanes on Fifth and Forbes avenues, improving reliability and travel times for riders. The project also includes a new two-way bike lane on Fifth Avenue, upgraded sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps, improved traffic signals, and enhanced pedestrian safety features. 

These improvements are part of Phase II of the University Line project, which will strengthen connections between Downtown, Uptown, and Oakland while improving the overall travel experience for riders, pedestrians, and cyclists.
