Bringing Your Bike (or Scooter) on PRT
Two Wheels. One Trip
PRT makes it easy to combine your bike or scooter with public transit. Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or exploring Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, our system is designed to keep you moving safely and conveniently.
Battery-powered bicycles (e-bikes) are permitted on bike racks as long as they fit securely.
Bringing Your Bike on the Bus
Every PRT bus is equipped with a front-mounted bike rack that can hold up to two bicycles with wheel sizes of 16 inches or larger. There’s no additional charge to bring your bike.
Our racks are designed for most standard two-wheeled bicycles. Tandem and recumbent bikes cannot be carried. Battery-powered bicycles (e-bikes) are welcome as long as they fit securely on the rack.
How to Use the Bike Rack
Follow these simple steps to safely load and unload your bike:
- Stand next to your bike at the bus stop so the operator knows you plan to load it.
- Tell the operator you’ll be loading your bike.
- Remove any loose items such as bags, water bottles, or pumps.
- Load and unload your bike from the curb or in front of the bus.
- Raise and secure the support arm over the top of the front tire.
- Before your stop, remind the operator that you’ll be unloading your bike.
You are responsible for loading and unloading your bicycle. For safety reasons, bus operators cannot assist with the bike rack.
When accessing busway stations, please walk your bike to and from the platform—riding on the busway is not permitted.
Bringing Your Bike on Light Rail
Bicycles are also welcome on Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s light rail vehicles at no additional cost. Each vehicle can accommodate up to two bicycles at a time.
To ensure everyone’s safety and comfort:
- Load and unload bikes only at high-platform stations.
- Stow your bike in the designated wheelchair space.
- Riders with disabilities always have priority over bicycles.
- Hold onto your bike securely during your ride and keep it clear of aisles and doors.
- Walk your bike through stations—riding is not allowed on platforms or in station areas.
E-bikes are permitted on light rail vehicles as long as they are handled safely and fit within the designated spaces. Please make sure they are turned off before boarding.
Bringing Your Bike on the Inclines
PRT welcomes bicycles on Pittsburgh’s iconic inclines.
- Monongahela Incline: One bicycle is permitted at a time and must be stowed in the upper level of the incline car. E-bikes are permitted.
- Duquesne Incline: Up to two bicycles are permitted on board at all times.
Scooters on Transit
Battery-powered 2-wheel scooters are not permitted inside any of our vehicles or on the bike racks. Mobility scooters with 3 or 4 wheels are allowed.
Stay Safe and Ride Smart
PRT supports a mix of travel choices—bus, rail, incline, bike, or scooter—to help you get where you need to go. Whatever way you ride, please stay alert, follow posted instructions, and travel safely.
