Pittsburgh Regional Transit is dedicated to continuously improving safety and security across our transit system.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County Transit Police provide a safety and security presence across our system.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County Transit Police Department has been dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of riders, employees, and transit facilities across Allegheny County since 1968.
The department’s police officers respond to and investigate crimes related to transit services, using proactive policing strategies to reduce crime and enhance public safety.
Transit Police work in partnership with other law enforcement and public safety agencies, as well as transit employees and customers, to address the needs of a growing region and meet public safety challenges. The department is committed to treating everyone with respect and dignity and to providing professional, fair, and impartial law enforcement services to the entire community.
Community involvement plays an important role in maintaining a safe transit system. Riders are encouraged to report suspicious activity or provide crime tips—anonymously if they wish—by contacting police immediately.

PRT frequently relies on our passengers and the general public to alert us to any suspicious or dangerous activity on our vehicles or property.
To report suspicious activity please contact your local law enforcement. If there is an emergency, call 9-1-1.
This could include someone wearing clothing that doesn’t match the weather or season, something bulging or sticking out under a person’s clothes in an unusual way, or someone who appears to be trying to blend in even though they still seem out of place in the surroundings.
This could include someone who seems unusually nervous, tense, or is sweating a lot, a person who leaves a bag or package behind and quickly walks away, someone moving in a suspicious way such as slowly scanning the area or suddenly running, or someone taking photos of transit operations or equipment without authorization.
Suspicious items or packages could include bags or clothing with wires, switches, or electronic devices sticking out, unattended bags, boxes, or backpacks, unexplained smoke, mist, gas, vapor, smells, or leaking fluids, and spray bottles or aerosol cans that seem out of place.
If you see something suspicious or someone doing something dangerous, call Transit Police at 412-255-1385. It’s also a good idea to have a plan to stay in touch with your family or friends during an emergency. If an emergency happens, try to stay calm, listen carefully, and follow any instructions from transit staff or emergency responders.
